The GROW model of coaching
How to Use the GROW model of coaching
The beauty of working with the GROW model of coaching is that you don't have to be an expert on your client's specific situation to be able to coach them. The GROW coaching model provides a framework with general questions to obtain goals, obstacles, options and more without ever needing to offer advice or force a particular direction. In a sense, the coach offers a dynamic vehicle for the development of his client.
The stages of the GROW model of coaching
The GROW model of coaching consists of four stages. The word GROW is actually an acronym for Goal – Reality – Options – Will. To put it metaphorically, the GROW model of coaching is what you need to plan a trip. You start with the map: where are you going (Objective) and where are you coming from (Reality)? It then plots the different routes and modes of transport (Options). Finally, it helps you choose the option that suits you best while taking into account the obstacles in the way. You then map out the process and ensure that your motivation for the trip is maximized.
Step 1: Goal
Step 2: Reality
Step 3: Options
Step 4: Will
Apply the GROW model of coaching to your life or organization. This is just a very basic overview of what the GROW model of coaching is all about. As you can see, this is not enough for a full coaching trajectory. A coach also needs their listening skills and relationship building skills. Moreover, other coaching tools make this approach less rational and allow creativity and contact with the subconscious.
